My house sits in Alley along with several others. The alley connects two roads together. Half is paved in the middle sits a 3' wall with an opening in the center.

Iv been here two years and use this alley every single day. Delivery drivers also use this alley way (park and walk). Lots of old people cross this way as well.
Anyway… A few days a go I leave my house and there is a man on the other side who stops me and throws a fit about being on his property. He claims to be my neighbor just on the otherside of the wall. I don't think he knows who am and iv never seen him before. I just nod my head and keep walking.
My question is this, can someone block an alley like this?
In reality, there is nothing he can do stop me from walking the 10seconds to the other side anyway. And there are other houses that use the other side as well. Even if he called the koban, I'd be already off "his" property and long gone anyway.
I think 🤔, he is technically correct and since this small opening is on his yard, I'm trespassing for the 3 seconds I use it to walk to the other side.
Considering iv seen people filming themselves and walking in places they should… And I'm doing literally nothing to harm this place…
Was he just have a bad gaijin hating day or should I really waste 5mins going around to the official road. No one respects this rule but I understand it doesn't make it right.
There is an open scissor gate on this wall. It's not lockable or anything. The gate is left open, you dont need to touch it to use the pathway.
He 100% uses my side of the alley as well.

It must be hard for people who are so worried about trespassers to survive in Japan.Â
If it’s his private property then yes, he does have the right to block it off. It’s probably not your fault but a culmination of less well-behaved trespassers. Maybe he caught a dunk pissing on the wall, people leaving trash there, or maybe just feels uncomfortable with people passing so closely by his house. I’ve seen similar allies blocked off with anything from traffic cones to fencing
Maybe you can familiarize yourself with them and tell them you live where you live and see if they can make an exception for you
The previous elderly owner of my house was like this. She also hung up signs about disposing of dog poo on just about everything you could hang something from. She blocked the alley with dozens of old bicycles. When I moved in I removed all of it.
Do you own your land? There ought to have been an explanation of the private road/land that the house faces on to.
If not, ask your landlord.
My house is on a private road , and each of the houses which face onto it own a certain percentage of the private road. And there is a stipulation that we have to keep the land open so as not to block the other residents.
Hard to understand without a picture. Can he put rocks or planters on his “property” making the pathway useless?
If it’s his property and he doesn’t want you on it then he’s within his rights. You should be able to check at your city or ward office to find out where the actual property lines are. Maybe he doesn’t really know.
If the owner takes a video and submit it to the police, they will contact you about trespassing on private property.
Trespassing is illegal even in US too.
If he uses your side of the alley, should negotiate with him so you’ll both be able to use other’s part of the alley.
It may be a setback, a piece of land he owns but must keep open.
I have one around my house, almost 1 meter I must keep it clear for people to walk or car to cross each other. It’s my land, I must take care of it (and pay taxes on it if I remember well) but I cannot block it.
And I think it’s fair as many roads are too narrow around there.
If you bought the house then you should have the plan showing what is public access and what is private access. If you are renting the house contact the rental agency and get them to clarify what is the right of access. If you don’t need to the alley way, I wouldn’t use it until the matter is cleared up.
Whether you’re on his property for 1 second or 3, that point is you are on his property. The police coming and seeing you on his property is not the issue if he has a video of you on his property. Worst if he says something was missing and it could be you.
your side of the alley is not your property.
Let me see if I TLDR correctly:
>I’ve been cutting through someone elses property. I would like to continue cutting through their property because it is convenient for me to do so. That person has asked me not to cut through their property. Is it legal for them to block access to their property so I can’t cut through it? Then a lot of excuses and attempts at self justification.
