I'm going to be in Japan from November 8-18 this year, and I hope we'll be able to view fall foliage in this trip.
Unfortunately, due to the hotter and likely extended summer season, the dates for fall foliage are forecasted to occur much later. Yesterday, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced its first annual autumn leaves forecast (the first forecast is in early September, then updated as time goes on). The forecasted peak date in Tokyo is November 26, and Osaka is November 25. These dates are just the forecasted dates of the peak when the red color hits its peak, and of course subject to change depending on mother nature (cold weather may come in earlier, etc.)
The big question is, will I be able to see at least yellow color (instead of the peak red) in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto during my time there? We also plan to take day trip to Mt. Fuji/Hanoke from Tokyo, and Nara Park from Osaka. Now I'm thinking we should take a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo since fall will occur earlier the further north we go. When we arrive to Tokyo on November 8, at this point I'm not sure we will see any sign of fall foliage in the city. We don't need the peak of the redness, yellow color before turning red will be fine as well. The illuminations of the park in Tokyo in observing the fall foliage have been traditionally started in the later part of November as well. Most likely we will miss that.
Any advice on how to catch fall foliage during our time in Japan from November 8-18 with very late fall foliage forecast? (our hotel home base will be in Tokyo first and then Osaka then going back to Tokyo to fly home).
