Advice for going Amanohashidate sandbar to Matsue by car

Hi all,

I am thinking of going to the following places by car:

1. Ine Boat houses
2. Amanohashidate sandbar
3. Tottori sand dunes
4. Kinosaki hot springs
5. Adachi Museum of Art

Background: I've not driven in Japan before, but have my international license ready, comfortable driving on that side of the road, and been to Japan a few times. I don't speak Japanese. I could take 1-3 weeks.

Key question:

Where should I get the rental car from, and return to? Ideally wouldn't backtrack? I'll be flying into Tokyo so figure I'd either fly into some local airport nearby or take the shinkansen. Was thinking get the car from somewhere near Kyoto, or one of the small airports in the region itself, but don't know where.

Also welcome advice on:

• Any other recommendations on where to stop in-between and around the area? (already been to Kyoto, Hiroshima, Okayama, Kobe. Wouldn't mind seeing Kobe or Hiroshima again – if so, would be tempted to get to Takamatsu – then would be tempted to go further into Shikoku as never been)
• Do car rentals allow you to pickup in one location and drop off at another? Are there recommended 'main' bases?
• Is Kyoto really crazy to drive out of?
