What is the cheapest way in Japan to draw cash from foreign banks?

Are there certain ATMs that are cheaper?

  1. If you have an overseas debit card, you should be good to withdraw from post office. Not sure about fees though. Last time I tried my overseas accout, I could only use the post office.

  2. Can pull out 100,000 for a fee of 220 at 7/11 bank. My home bank doesn’t add any extra fees and the conversion is pretty good, so that works for me. They will ask you if you want 7 bank to convert it for you, but depending on your bank that almost always should be a worse exchange rate.

  3. Schwab checking account debt card at 7/11 bank ATM. No fee from Schwab, standard Visa exchange rate (which is typically about as good as you can expect), and 220y fee for the ATM is reimbursed by Schwab at the end of the month.

  4. No but a lot of foreign banks offer foreign atm fee refunds if you keep enough cash in your foreign account. Sometimes it’s limited to a certain number of times per month. But if you got a lot then it can be unlimited.

  5. Transfer it to your Japanese account then withdraw it from the ATM for free.

Transfer costs into Japan are typically much lower than transfers out of Japan.
