I work at a juku and have lots of materials related to exams etc, but one of our students has asked to do Eikaiwa classes with me. He's a first year senior high schooler who attends one of those vocational schools that has more emphasis on things like cooking, sports, etc. His dream is to be a chef and open a restaurant some day and wants to learn English to further this goal. I have him once a week and we've finished 2 lessons and I've gotten good feedback so far and I feel like the lessons have been enjoyable but lacked a goal or drive of some kind.
This is very different for me since I'm used to exam prep and drilling some grammar or vocab of some kind so I'm kind of winging it here with no resources apart from some small prep I manage to put together. For example, I made a slide show to "woo" my student a bit and show that I put some work into the lesson, it had some conversation stuff on it that we went over together with a bit of roleplay. We also had a look at a sushi shop menu online and talked about the different kind of food on there and had him describe and explain some of them to me as if I knew nothing about it, like a tourist might.
From here I'm not really sure what to do… We haven't had a problem of not being able to find something to talk about, he's very talkative, but I don't want the lesson to go totally off the rails and end up talking about anime for 20 minutes or something. I want the classes to go well so I get more of these from others because I've been enjoying it.
