Tokyo and around in January: Hakone vs Nikko

My wife and I will be spending 5 nights in Tokyo during the third week of January.

I was thinking that we could do some day trips outside the city and perhaps even spend one night in either Hakone or Nikko, during a weekday to avoid crowds.

Considering it's winter, if you had to choose one place to spend a night in, which one would it be? Which one do you think is easier to move around sights?

I'm leaning more towards Hakone given that there's some interesting places between there and Tokyo (Yokohama and Kamakura), plus it might be possible to see Mt Fuji from there, something that we never did. Also Nikko seems to be more beatiful during autumn. But if you have a reason to choose Nikko instead, please let me know.

Finaly, is it even worth it spending a night in any of those places? Or is it better to go and return to Tokyo in the same day?
