How exactly frowned upon is tattoos in Japan? Especially in academic settings.

Hi! I am currently thinking about going to Japan for my Masters degree in Cinema Studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts.

However, I have a tattoo on my sternum of the Fūrinkazan (風林火山). I have heard different opinions on it, some articles on the internet said that it’s fine as long as you can cover it up, which isn’t a problem because it’s on my sternum, but one of my family friends living there told us that they conduct a physical examination before you enroll in the Masters program, and if you have a tattoo, especially one that is reminiscence of the yakuza irezumi, that’s a strict no-go.

Are tattoos still really that frowned upon in academic settings, and can this get in the way of my current plan?

Thank you in advance!
