How realistic it is for me to go to a Japanese Language School and find a job?

I know this topic has been done over and over again, I also did my research but still unsure, so here goes nothing.

Here’s the basic information about myself:

* I will be turning 30 by the end of this year and I would love to go attend Japanese Language School in about 2 years or so (roughly 2024.)
* I am willing to take risk in an entry IT role, I have my Bachelor of Science that I obtained in 2019 which is years ago but due to Covid, things are difficult.
* Canada Citizenship

Honestly, I am unsure whether my plan is realistic or not, I love Japan and I would love to be here long term if I find employment but due to the current situation I only have experience in general labour. I did Working Holiday in Japan already so I know what I am getting into, however I still want to be here long term.

I am actively studying Japan, currently at N5 and hopefully to advance into N2 by the time I finish my Language School or during. I am currently saving money to attend perhaps a year or 2 depending on the situation.

Although I don’t have experience in IT or tech overall, I have been actively learning through collaborating with a mentor in the Data field in which my mentor is very strict on building a strong foundation (understand why am I doing this, what are the logical steps I must take. the theoretical knowledge) as I want to pursue a career as a Data Analyst so that I can learn about the technologies and build my portfolio.

At the same time I am also volunteering (although I’m not sure you can call it volunteer or unpaid internship?) for a local analytics team that I am contributing my time outside of my FT job in helping with their ongoing data science projects (analysing the data, build visualisation, or generally any tasks that are easy enough for my level and move up from there) that I am grateful for them to give me a chance to practice on a real data, getting reviews on my progress and build up my knowledge.

My plan is to look for a Language School that could help me in finding full-time employment albeit entry-level which as I mentioned, I won’t mind and be open to it while study to get N2. However, my concerns and worries are that there’s a chance I won’t be able to find a job after the whole ordeal.

Do you think this is possible or how challenge it will be given my circumstances and my “experience,” and for some who is 30+ looking for an entry-level IT job in Japan after the Language School? Would love to hear everyone’s opinion and thoughts.

Cheers,

  1. I mean you would have two years(plus a few more months) to job hunt… so why not? Just start job hunting from the start and be willing to quit school for the right position.

    Just go to school in/near a big city so that you can go to job interviews easily.

  2. If you want to then you should pursue it as soon as you can because I heard the longer you’re out of school and you’re looking to “study”, the more stringent it gets.

    Technically, you don’t even need to finish the course as long as a company is willing to sponsor your work visa. Though, completing at least 1 semester is recommended so that you actually have some school documents to show ISA.
