My aunt bought a box that has writing on it and I’ve translated it as a retractable gun barrel but I’m not well-versed in weaponry from that period and the kanji is a bit hard to read.

Try posting the picture to r/translator and see if they can help you out (I’ve seen similar requests to identify old WW2 artifacts, including Japanese weapons, posted there before)
