Help with Kansai itinerary

Hi everyone,

As part of our trip, we will be staying 7 nights in Osaka (we found a really cheap and nice hotel near Namba station) and we will be using Osaka as a base for our daily trips. Now, we were thinking of going to Kyoto 2 days in a row, then a day Trip to Nara and then a day trip where we will first be visiting Himeji castle, and then going to Kobe in the afternoon. However, do you think it's maybe better to spend half a day in Nara, then returning to Osaka in the afternoon and adding an extra day for Kyoto instead?

How should we go about our Itinerary for Kyoto then? I was thinking for the first day to go from Osaka with the Keihan line pass and then follow the tracks: Fushimi Inari, Gion, and the Eastern part of Kyoto. Then for the second day we planned on going to Arashiyama first and then returning to the Eastern part of the city. However, if we are going to add a third day as well, how should we go about it?

If we are adding the third day, maybe we could spend one night in Kyoto then and leave our luggage in the hotel room in Osaka?

Finally, since we are planning to go to Himeji, does a JR west rail pass for 3 days pay off? (We would use the Keikyuu coupon for the first day, Hankyuu and Subway pass for the second and then the third day would be for the trip to Kobe and Himeji).
