Kyoto for 1 day, what are the essentials?

I’m going to Japan for a very impromptu trip in November for just one week, I have friends going there for the full month on a study trip which I couldn’t quite squeeze into my work schedule, but found very cheap flights as it’s off-season so decided to join them for a week.

The plan was to stay in Tokyo but then of course Nintendo had to go and open a museum in Kyoto 😄 I’ve already booked a hotel in Tokyo for the full week so instead of shuffling my arrangements I’m going to get an early morning bullet train and make a day trip out of Kyoto.

This will be my first time visiting Kyoto, if you only had one day to spend there what would be the must see or do activities, or any hidden gems outside of the go to places that are worth doing on a first visit? I have no doubt I’ll be back to Kyoto on a later trip but it would be nice to make the most of the day I spend there.

Kinkaku-ji & Fushimi-Inari-Taisha are the obvious picks and it might be nice to tick those off early as I’m not always overly keen on the big tourist hotspots.

EDIT: Getting up early as much as I’d like to isn’t much of an option as I’m having to travel in from Tokyo, the earliest I can get there is 8am.
