Has anyone else run into issues setting up an online banking account with SBI Sumishin Net Bank?

Despite going over the details of my Zairyu card with a fine-tooth comb, I keep getting the following email after applying for a bank account using the app:

「オンライン口座開設(スマホで本人確認)」にてお申込みいただきましたが、
このお申込方法での受付ができませんでした。
(理由:ご提出いただいた本人確認書類と申込情報が一致しなかった、本人確認書類と顔写真の照合ができなかった、本人確認書類にアルファベット氏名の記載があるが漢字またはカナで入力されていた、外国籍のかたでご提出いただいた本人確認書類に国籍の記載がなかった等)

I've always made sure the details I've submitted match exactly what's shown on my Zairyu card. I even went so far as to shave my beard so that I better match my photo. Still, bupkis. I sacrificed my beard for nothing!

Anyone else run into a similar issue but was able to find a solution? Any help would be appreciated. Or if SBI Sumishin Net Bank sucks butt and there's a better option for ebanking, I'm all ears.

  1. Are you from the U.S.? I tried to sign up online once and the site told me that because I’m from the U.S. I have to mail in a paper form instead of doing the online form.
