Raising a Bilingual Child in Japan

Our daughter is six and has grown up here in Japan. In the house, my wife speaks to her in Japanese (when it’s her and the kid alone) and English (when all three of us are together). I speak to our daughter entirely in English. That said, my biggest concern is that as she gets older, she won’t have a chance to develop her reading and writing skills like a kid would growing up in the United States, and I think this will limit her options to say go to college in the states if she wants to. I thought about having her spend part of her summers in the United States with family (including kids her age) but my wife understandably was worried about doing this.

If anyone has any hints or just their own experiences (whether successes or failures) of raising or attempting to raise a bilingual child to be able to function in the non-local language at an academic level, I would greatly appreciate any and all responses
