Feedback for 2 weeks itinerary for Tokyo-Fuji-Japan Alps (May 2023)

Hi, I’ve been reading this for a bit as I plan for a 2-week trip to Japan in the second half of May next year (a week after Golden Week). Hope to get some feedback on my itinerary and suggestions.

I’ve been to Japan several times but it’ll be my husband’s first visit. We aren’t travelling to Kansai this time, saving that for another time as our flights are in and out of Tokyo. I’ve also been to Takayama/Hirayu/Shirakawa-go in winter previously, and I thought it’d be nice to revisit Takayama in a different season.

I’m planning to stay around the Tokyo station area – I’ve always stayed in Shinjuku previously and thought to try something different this time.

We’re a young couple in our late-20s and we’re prioritising food & views for our trip. We’re usually the sort of travellers who are up at 5am and in bed by 10pm, so the ryokan life in spring would be a dream 🙂

Day 1: Land in Haneda in the evening, check in

Day 2: Ueno/Yanaka/Asakusa

Day 3: Toyosu Market/Kiyosumi-Shirakawa/Odaiba/Akihabara

Day 4: Disneyland (Overnight in Disney hotel)

Day 5: Disneysea (Overnight in Disney hotel)

*\*the Disney parks are a highlight for us so we’re dedicating a full day to each park, staying at the Disney hotels for 2 nights*

Day 6: Travel to Kawaguchiko (Overnight in Kawaguchiko)

Day 7: Kawaguchiko/Fuji Five Lakes (Overnight in Kawaguchiko)

Day 8: Travel to Matsumoto, train to Azumino to see the wasabi farm and some views (Overnight in Matsumoto)

Day 9: See Matsumoto Castle before travelling to Kamikochi and exploring the area (Overnight in Kamikochi)

Day 10: Hike Mt Yakedake (Overnight in Kamikochi)

Day 11: Bus to Takayama, spend time in the town (Overnight in Takayama)

Day 12: Explore around Takayama, possible travel to Shinhotaka ropeway (Overnight in Takayama)

Day 13: Travel from Takayama to Tokyo (via Nagoya or Toyama?)

Day 14: Shibuya/Nakameguro/Roppongi

Day 15: Shinjuku/Ikebukuro

Day 16: Ginza/revisiting stuff, plane departs Haneda 10PM

I’m wondering if the Matsumoto/Kamikochi/Takayama leg seems too rushed? The travel times between Kawaguchiko and Matsumoto (3-4h) and Takayama and Tokyo (5h) aren’t ideal, and I’m open to suggestions on how I might be able to reshuffle things.

Thanks!

  1. From the title and timeline I thought you were going to do the Tateyama Alpine. Maybe also consider that if you haven’t already.

  2. … no, does not seems that rushed for the Kamikochi-Takayama part.

However, just check where is Shin Hotaka Ropeway and reconsider doing it as a daytrip from Takayama. >!It is literally in Kamikochi!<
