I arrived in Japan in 2016 as a student with a scholarship. My tutors told me I can just ignore the Kokumin Nenkin Seido so I trusted them. I've been living here with the same scholarship from 2016 to 2023, then went back home for a year, and now back to Japan with a different scholarship which is considered taxable. While trying to understand how to file for taxes here I find out I should have actually filed for Nenkin Menjo (pension tax exemption) every single year. I went to the City Hall today and managed to file retroactively for the last two year (which I find pretty ridiculous since I wasn't even in Japan last year). Will I now need to pay for the remaining 6 years I didn't apply for the exemption? How screwed am I?
