Current Demand/Landscape For English Teachers in Japan?

Hey everyone! Apologies for misleading title, I now realize that the end of the title should've ended in a question mark and not a period.

A little background about me: I'm in my final semester of college/university, fairly young (early 20s), and graduating in June with my bachelor's degree. I'm also sadly wrapping up my term as an intern in my field (UX design), which ends in July.

Although I'm preparing for the job hunt by updating my resume and portfolio, I'm also seeing this as an opportunity to take a "gap year" and fulfill my dream of living in Japan. I know Japan isn't a perfect country, but I've always been intrigued by the culture and would love to immerse myself in it, rather than vicariously living it through youtube videos.

I don't intend to live in Japan long-term. While I love teaching and mentoring others, my career goals really lie within UX Design or something creative. Basically, I just want to explore a new culture different from mine (Canadian) and hopefully come back with some good memories.

My Questions:

  1. How is the current market for English teachers in Japan? is it in demand?
  2. If you work at an Eikaiwa, what is your experience?
  3. If you work for JET, what is your experience? (I'm aware applications are closed.)
  4. Did you find any opportunities to learn basic/conversational Japanese?
  5. If you are a current English teacher in Japan, why did you decide to do it?
  6. If you are a former English teacher in Japan, why did you quit?

Honestly, I would love for this to be an open conversation about the topic. I would love to hear anything you folks have to say.
