What Japanese people think when a random stranger says hi?

So I’m living in Turkey and the university I study has 3 japanese professors, they are working on different department and because I’m into the Japanese culture and stuff I’m just following them on instagram and they look very friendly.

So once in the morning when im walking on the sidewalk two of them walking towards to me and I know simple japanese words like “ohayo”,”yoroshiku onegaishimasu” and since they know english we could have a simple conversation but suddenly I thought what if they think this is awkward because they are in a different country and random stranger says hi to them on their language, summary if this situation happens again should I say hi? Would it be weird to them?

  1. Go for it. But if it’s morning instead of “ohayoo” say “ohayoo gozaimasu” because it’s more polite.

  2. Well I suppose they would understand that they’re in a different country with a different culture.

  3. I guess you can say hi if you really like them. Perhaps you can explain that you saw them on Instagram and felt like greeting them. And apologize in case they felt it was weird that a stranger greeted them.
