How exact do customs forms need to be when shipping house goods?

My wife and I are shipping some of our house goods from the states to Japan.

For a box filled with vinyls and books. Do we have to list each individually on the customs form? Or can we just list miscellaneous vinyl / books?

For clothes, can I just write like “winter clothes” and our best guess at an estimated value?

  1. When I shipped my boxes from Australia I needed to be very specific, like “3x Used T-Shirts” specific, along with a dollar value it’s worth. I think they then use that value for your duties payment, but I didn’t have to pay anything additional so I’m not sure if my shipping company covered it or maybe they had already calculated the customs value and included it in their invoice.

  2. Not sure about house goods but for general packages to the US it’s a PITA. Everything has to be itemized (what specifically is it, how many units, what price per unit, country of origin), and has to be done online then a label is printed out at the post office.

Gone are the days you could just handwrite “food” or “gift” with an address.
