Eiken 2, writing

Hi everyone. I’m trying to help a kid for eiken 2. He passed eiken 3 well, however for eiken 2, his weakest portion is writing.
I’m curious about the scoring, what is an important point to prioritize. He’s very good at English conversationally, so it would be a shame to fail because of the writing portion. Thanks!

  1. Just tell him to follow the examples from past years. It is extremely formulaic.

Unfortunately Japanese kids don’t write persuasive essays even in their kokugo classes so what might seem obvious to you is a completely new skill for them, even in their native language.

  2. He’s trying to go from 3 to 2 directly, bypassing Pre-2?

There are tons of books to help prepare for this if you want, and past test questions are available on the website.

  3. The gap between eiken pre-2 and 2 is probably 2-3x the gap between eiken 3 and eiken pre-2. It’s a challenging test for most students.

Having said that, the writing section is one of the easiest to score well in, provided students understand the kind of answer they are supposed to give.

It is essential to stay within the word count, to answer the question, and to give at least two valid reasons. As long as they do that, they should get a passing score for the section.
