I just had a question about Westgate housing placement and would appreciate your advice and insights.
Recently, I have received my COE, and I am soon to fly out to Japan.
I’ve heard much about Westgate’s over-priced apartments and so, I asked them if I could find my own accommodation.
Now, the problem is, they told me they don’t know my university placement yet. It’s not finalized. But in the documents that they sent me to process the visa, there was an official letter from the university–stating the need to hire me, etc., So, I asked them if this wasn’t the university that I’ll be placed in, but their answer was, the university might change. It’s a placeholder. And they will only know my final placement a few days before my flight.
Is this true? My flight has been booked, and I have my visa. Can they change my placement? Has anyone had a similar situation? I really want to save money during my time in Japan, but at the same time, I don’t want to risk booking a sharehouse when they might suddenly change my placement.

They essentially get a uni to write a letter saying they need you just for immigration purposes but then can send you somewhere else once you make it in the country. Seems a bit sketchy but it’s fairly standard practice
You could absolutely be placed anywhere. Once they know your final placement, you should look into somewhere to crash while you find your own apartment.
It sucks, but it is what it is with dispatch companies.
If you have a signed contract that lists the place of work, salary, and other details, they are obligated to fulfill the contract under those stated terms.
But if your contract does not state the place of work, and only refers to “place of work” in vague terms, then yes, they can change your workplace as they see fit. That is why working for a temp agency sucks – you’re at their beck and call if you want a job.
That said, you can always book a short stay wherever they are sending you for training before you start at your uni. Then when they tell you which uni they are sending you to, you can move.
They will try to discourage this, but they don’t get to dictate to you where to live. That’s not in any workplace’s purview.
Of course, you might struggle a bit to find a good place, but if you are the independent type and want to make sure the company has zero control over you, that’s the way to go.
