Kyoto University housing advice

Starting next September, I will stay at Kyoto University for one semester as a GESR exchange student at the Faculty of Letters on the Yoshida campus, and I would like some advice on the application for an accommodation in one of the dorms.

Unfortunately it seems like I can not apply for Yoshida International House or Hyakumanben Int’l House, which sucks because those seemed like the best and the closest to campus (I asked them why I can’t choose one of these, but it’ not use crying over spilled milk anyways).

The six choices I have left are Shugakuin, Uji, Ohbaku, Satsuki, Mizuki, and Kyoto Ryugakusei House, and I need to list them in order of preference.

Is there anyone who can help me figuring out what are the best options in order? I feel like Shugakuin is the best one out of these six, but I am afraid the competition for it will be harsh and I will end up on another dorm (and I’d rather not deal with commuting nearly everyday to Yoshida from Uji or Ohbaku).

EDIT: what I am most concerned about are the facilities inside the dorm (like the overall condition of the rooms, or the communal places like showers and so on) and the distance from basic daily commodities, like a supermarket and such. I plan to get a bike as soon as possible once I get there, so I’m not scared of the actual distance to Yoshida from the dorm, as those in Sakyo-ku and Kamigyo-ku seem to be at most 30 minutes away from the main campus by bicycle (again, I pray for anything but Uji and Ohbaku).

  1. I’m not familiar with Kyoto so I can’t judge, but for when people who do come into the thread, it would be super useful to list the things you want from the area/dorms you live in. Things like:

    – Local amenities
    – Distance from campus/areas you’re interested in
    – The character of the neighbourhood (quiet/lively/lots of other students/etc.

  2. Ex Kyoto University exchange student here. I stayed in Misasagi paying 100USD per month. Cycled around 20 mins to school. V cheap cost of living and reasonable convenience. Shugakuin should be similar too
