Quitting my job

Hello,

I am currently in Japan in my first year under a 5 year working visa. If I quit my job, am I legally allowed to stay here without getting another job for another 4 years? I am wondering if maybe it is viable for me to quit and just work a US remotely, and if I do want to extend my stay beyond the 4 years, to find another position in Japan when the time comes.

Thank you for your advice!

  1. Sounds like an eikaiwa put a lock on you. 4 years time to find Mrs. Right.

Remember to notify Nenkin that you won’t be paying every year, at the start of the Japanese year.

The visa is yours, just don’t go around notifying everybody that you have the visa, but don’t have the job. Somebody will snitch, and if immigration finds out, they could give you a set amount of time to find a job, say 3 months, or deport you.

Considering the current wave of tourists, and would-be ~~immigrants~~, errr English teachers to Japan, they are going to be hella busy from now.

I wouldn’t worry about it, I just wouldn’t advertise the fact.

  2. Staying for the remaining of your status of residency is fine as long as you’re actively engaging in your status of residency. Luckily, actively looking for work with Japanese employers and attending interviews with them counts as actively engaging in your status of residency.

You have to notify immigration within 14 days after your final day see here: https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00015.html or here: https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00014.html (use correct link for which status of residency you’re on)

You will also need to enroll in and pay national pension and national health insurance.

Working for a US employer/overseas employer however, is not ok on your work visa. Your work visa permits you to work for a domiciled Japanese employer only, and within the scope of your status residency and Certificate of authorized employment (CoAE).

  3. This info is in the wiki but you must notify immigration within 14 days of quitting your job (can be done online). After 3 months of not engaging in your activities (aka not working and not job hunting in Japan) immigration can begin proceedings to revoke your status (not automatic or guaranteed).

On the terms of typical working statuses, you cannot work remotely for a non japanese company without permission from immigration (which they will not grant if you don’t have a main japanese company). You are still responsible for paying all your tax and insurance obligations.
