Japanese words you wish you have known before traveling to Japan

Hello guys,

I am native Japanese speaker and trying to make a use of some of my English skills to help foreign tourists by summarizing Japanese words that would be helpful for them during their travels.

(including the words that went viral after pandemic like sanitizing hands and checking one’s temperature)

Do you have any words would you like to learn before traveling to Japan or ones you wish you have known before you already visit Japan?

Let me know your ideas, thank you (:

  1. “Can I leave my bags here at the hotel front desk?”

“My shinkansen ticket is being rejected at the ticket gate. How do I use the ticket?”

“Please help to check how much money is left in my old Suica cards.”

  2. The most indispensable word in Japanese has to be 大丈夫. I can’t count how many times a day I say, “大丈夫です”.

  3. The proper way to say “ You are welcome”?

Do you want to eat here or take out? -> mainly to understand what the staff is asking and mainly for asian looking tourist

  4. 並ぶ / ならぶ / narabu means to queue, or stand in line.

Oh how I wish I’d known that word when the hour + queue moved and we got lost and tried to explain it to the shop staff…
