Immigration lines / queue time now Japan has reopened

I’m aware of rule 12 – I’m not after policy debates, but I am looking for real experience of people visiting Japan since the borders reopened.

How is the entry process? Is the immigration time significantly longer than pre-covid?

I went to book pocket wifi, which I usually pick up in the airport post office, and they had a note saying that immigration up to 4 hours now (so suggested pick up at the hotel).

I just wanted to hear from anyone that had been into Japan recently and to understand if the border immigration time was indeed +4 hours nowadays. I’m travelling with a 1 year old baby and I just want to plan accordingly.

Thank you

Edit as I foolishly left out key details!!

With check-in bags yes, but I’m not worried about that, only the entry process.
We are triple vaccinated and will do the app. Baby will not be vaccinated.

  1. When are you traveling? And what airport/terminal are you coming into? And are you checking bags? That info will be helpful for responses.

That said, I don’t think Immigration lines reached four hours even at the height of 2019 travel when it was at its international tourism peak, at least not for many airports/terminals. I’d be very surprised if it was anything close to that right now. With a blue MySOS app, there is almost no additional overhead to the process since the check takes only a minute.

I came into the country on October 9th, so I unfortunately can’t comment on post-opening immigration myself.

  2. Definitely make sure to fill out the mysos. Arrived Oct. 11, smooth everything but a lot of people do pick up pocket wifi or sim card before leaving airport so it does take time there, not really at immigration

  3. I arrived on the 12th through Haneda and it took about 30 minutes to get off the plane and get onto the train out of the airport. Pretty smooth process and lines were pretty small.

  4. I arrived in Osaka on 13th of October. It took 5-10 minutes to enter the country and proceed to pick up my pocket wifi. All easy, fast and straightforward

  5. Arrived on the 13th in Kansai T1 after 5pm. Took about 45mins to go through the whole process – MySOS screening, immigration, customs/baggage check. Be sure to have the MySOS app filled-up, and all the landing cards filled-up as well (or with QR code too). Very systematic process including queues.
