I am a piano teacher active in Stockholm, Sweden.
Besides my educational activities I work with a project where selected pieces are gathered and arranged for piano (at a non-advanced level).
This collection of sheet music is supposed to result in printed album edition in the future by a Swedish book publisher.
Lately Japanese music has caught my interest (since my son has lived in Tokyo the last two years) and it would be wonderful to let people in our part of the world know about it better.
It should therefore be of great value to me to learn more about the Japanese repertoire concerning traditional (children’s) songs, folk music and traditional nursery rhymes.
My question is therefore, if you have any recommendations of songs, artists or publishers that create that type of music. Where could I search to get familiar with your interesting indigenous music?

Of course there’s lots of western songs in there too, but Japanese song books for kids largely contain Japanese kids songs. If you’re looking for academic literature in English about Japanese kids music I doubt there’s much available

“Your” is not a great choice of words as less than 1% of this sub is actually Japanese.
Anyway, if you’re in the beginning stages of stuff I would simply check out Wikipedia, there are tons of good articles related to Music in Japan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Japan is a good place to start. Plenty has been written about both modern and traditional Japanese music.
