In response to China rising , Australia and Japan signed a new security pact.

Prime Minister Kishida, who held a summit meeting with Prime Minister Albanesey in Australia, has just signed a new Australia-Japan Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation, a military security pact, the first such declaration since 2007.

The new declaration, with an eye on China’s growing military moves, stipulates that the two countries will consult with each other in the event of an “emergency” that affects the sovereignty of Japan and Australia or regional stability, and consider how to respond.

A senior Department of Foreign Affairs official said, “This is because both countries need to discuss the best course of action, including diplomatic and economic measures, including military measures, in the event of an escalation of a situation that affects both countries or is likely to escalate at an early stage.

The declaration also stressed the promotion of economic security, including the establishment of supply chains, as well as common values such as democracy, human rights and free trade, and called for peaceful resolution of disputes based on international law.
