Akihito is still alive. He *abdicated* in 2019 due to his declining health. He is 88 years old *now*, but he was 86 years old at the time of his abdication. His reign was 30 years (1989-2019). But he didn’t die in 2019, he just stopped being emperor of Japan. His son is the current emperor.
