Leaving Japan permanently to live in a different country, but can I still use the remaining 1 year duration that I have for a casual visit?

Hello,

When leaving Japan permanently, if I still have 1 year left in the visa duration, can I come back again on a later date within 1 year?

More importantly, will it affect pension? (I have received the move out certificate from the ward office)

Thanks

  1. Without address and no clear intention to return (eg job contract), you’re not eligible for the (special) reentry permit. Without reentry permit your permission to stay ends on leaving and you have to return your zairyu card to the officer.

Depending how many years you stayed, you can apply for pension cash-out or keep your blue pension book in a safe place long-term and get the pension when you reach retirement age. Many countries have bilateral pension agreements with Japan so even when you reach retirement age (in your home country or a third country with pension agreement), on the application form you state your stay in Japan and this increases your pension accordingly. Also check your embassy website for pension information.

Btw if you come back on a tourist visa, you can get a Japan Rail Pass so “loosing” the visa is not always disadvantageous.

  2. Of course not… they will ask you about your plans at the airport when you leave the country. If you have no address and no job here, the visa will be terminated. Actually if you have no job anymore, the visa will be terminated regardless after I think 6 months (unless you file for an extension, IE looking for another job)

You can keep the zairyu gaijin scum card for nostalgia but they will punch a hole through it to invalidate it.

You do NOT want to fuck with Japanese immigration on this. Just be honest and up front.
