UK > Japan: Dog in Plane Cargo. Any experience?

Hi everyone,

My wife and I will be moving to Japan next year and we will be bringing our dog. At the time of travel he will be a 2 year old English Cocker Spaniel who weighs around 14.5KG, so unfortunately this means he’s too heavy for the cabin and will need to go into cargo.

He’s a perfectly healthy dog and is crate trained, however as you’d expect we’re concerned about the flight. We have been recommend PetAir from a family friend and they have very good reviews. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them, or flying with their dog to Japan in general? What was the experience like etc.

Thanks

  1. All I would suggest is don’t go during the summer months (June to September) I think some airlines don’t allow cargo dogs on the flight anyway if destination is over a certain temp.

  2. We just moved to Tokyo with our dog end of May from the US. He’s 18kg and a brachycephalic breed. Also healthy and crate trained. It was his first time flying. We used AirAnimal and they did a great job. Constant updates, tied extra frozen water buckets to his crate door, pick and drop off door-to-door service. We also attached an apple AirTag to his crate so we’d know when he landed etc.

Be warned when it approaches summer airlines will not take dogs as they may need to sit out on the tarmac a few hours as they get loaded on and off the cargo plane. Other than that the flight didn’t seem to phase him as he was so happy to see us and still loves going into his crate for naps. However finding housing that will allow a “large dog” (ie dogs more than 7kg) is a whole other issue…

    Best of luck!
