I was watching a series on natural disasters on Netflix (Earthstorm). In episode 3 “Earthquake” they had footage of a tsunami drill at an elementary school (at about 17:25 into the episode) and all of the students were sitting outside wearing identical silver hoods. What are those?
(I tried to get a screenshot, but when I opened the screen capture app in Windows the netflix app blanks the screen because they’re worried about the revenue loss of a shared single frame, I guess)

They’re used for earthquakes to protect the kids from falling objects. There is [some debate](https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2022/02/07/national/school-disaster-hoods/) over whether helmets would be better.
Those are to protect their heads against falling debris during an earthquake. Some schools have newer foldable helmets and most workplaces have helmets for their employees.
