I have been an ALT here for many years. I have my bachelors and a TEFL, but I would like to do some more short online esl teaching courses. Free or payed is ok.
My recommendation is to do a Master’s. A bit more of a commitment than “some more short online ESL teaching courses”, but the payoff is a lot better.
You can get a CELTA online nowadays. It’s short, but you learn a lot.
As someone said CELTA, check out the curriculum and make sure you just aren’t redoing your TEFL. Other choice is if you want to work on a specific area there are free and paid courses online for things like genre writing, teaching dyslexics, TASK based learning, technology in education, specific approach like comprehensible input approaches etc. most of these will be more for learning though than any kind of cert which will be recognized in Japan.
I’m getting a TEFL cert with the website that CLAIR (JET?) recommended
and they have some different specializations, too. They have a “business English” cert and a “English for young learners” cert, both 50 hours each, and even some kind of English teaching diploma course. This might be helpful since you’re in Japan and this is the site that JET gives their grants for, so I assume it’s legit enough and is recognized in Japan.
Edit to say: I missed the deadline for the grant as I entered my last year and then suddenly decided to get a TEFL certification, and this is the website my friend sent me who DID get the grant this year.
What’s your aim? Do you just want to get a wider perspective of TESOL, or do you want to move on from ALT work?
