Im looking for a book about Japan history to understand why it is the way it is today

I want a book that speaks about different aspects of Japan’s past, from economy to religion to weather and how this has shaped their society, does it make sense? Im not an avid reader so im not sure how to describe it better but as an example i was reading this book about china past rising dragon, and it was amazing how well explained everything was there, from what the peasants went through to how those peasants malnutrition later affected the cities and made china go back in time.

To later reconstruct itself to what it is today

Would love to read something similar, hopefully not a very big book and hopefully entertaining enough to not fall asleep

  1. If you’re not a big reader listen to Dan Carlin’s Supernova in the East series and then decide if you wanna do a deep dive

  2. If you’re down to read manga Mizuki Shigeru’s Showa series does a pretty good job. Obviously it’s not as in-depth as other books, but it gives you a pretty good idea about what happened.

  3. I can’t help you with early history, but: For a sobering look into post-WW2 history, listen to the 3-episode series of Behind the Bastards podcast on Nobusuke Kishi, Abe’s gramps and one of the main founders of the LDP & modern Japan.

It’ll help you understand a lot of what’s going on today. He was also one of the people who helped bring Unification Church to Japan. [Here you go.](https://podcasts.apple.com/my/podcast/part-one-the-slavery-loving-fascist-who-built-modern-japan/id1373812661?i=1000536129306)
