Itinerary Help: Sake tourism in Nigata – Feb 2023

Hello everyone, super excited that I’ll actually be able to visit Japan for the first time in 12 years! I’m a huge fan of sake and I’ve decided to spend some time in Niigata because I hear it’s the capital of sake.

I’ll be arriving on Feb. 12 and planning to say 3 or 4 days. I can rent a car and think I will if I need to, but I’d prefer to take public transportation if possible.

So far, I’ve booked a tour at the Imayotsukasa brewery. I am looking for suggestions on where to visit, who to speak to and what to do. My goal here is to learn as much as possible, taste a wide variety of styles and overall leave feeling like I have a better understanding of Sake.

What would you recommend? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  1. You should stop at Echigo-Yuzawa station for Ponshukan Sake Museum and Rice Brewery. Probably you will need an overnight stay after the visit.

Otherwise you may visit Taiyo Brewery at Murakami.

Considering it’s February – I would not stray to far from Joetsu shinkansen and Niigata city as heavy snowfall may be expected and could otherwise destroy any plans.
