Claiming the 5,000 points for registering a MyNumber card

The way the campaign made it sound was that you’d get 5,000 points for registering for a My Number Card (the campaign was extended to December 2022)

When I open the app, it’s asking me to charge my account and I’ll receive 25% cash back in points. (So I have to charge 20,000 to my account to get the 5,000 for free)

I can’t help but feel this was grossly misleading. Unless I’ve made a mistake somewhere? Has anyone managed to take advantage of this campaign without having to cough up 20,000円?

UPDATE: As others have pointed out, it’s not a 5,000 point lump sum. It’s 25% “cash back” in points. The easiest way to get the full amount would be to top up 20,000円.

  1. It’s 25% cashback. I think you can connect it with credit card so your spending count and you get the point there instead, but not sure about the detail.

  2. That’s how it worked when it was introduced.

For Rakuten, I had to register, then once I spent ¥20,000, I got ¥5,000 points back.

  3. Omg thank you for this post. I was wondering why I havnt received the 5000yen yet. And yes your right, it’s very misleading.

  4. It’s a little misleading, yes, but connect it to something like Suica or Paypay, and use it for your everyday purchases, dining, groceries, etc. It’s an easy 5,000.

  5. That’s for the first part, but if you do the other two steps, you get 15,000 points straight up (not cashback), which is basically as good as yen to use.
