Cloud/DevOp career in Japan

Hello all,

I’ve been working in the Microsoft Azure space for some time now. I have a Bachelor’s in CS focused on Could computing and engineering I am also in my last semester of a Masters program for cyberSec.

When thinking about Japan a few years ago I read where they were sleeping on cloud tech but soon would start making the jump. So I went all in honing my skills so I could be comptive in the future as this was always a life long destination of mine. I feel based on research this area of IT is starting to rocket off and I want to catch it!

My main question is: How are these types of jobs viewed in Japan currently? I have done some research and it seems like a mixed bag of “some companies think it’s low skilled labor” to “companies are fighting to get devs and IT professionals!” So which is it? I see some job postings for SREs or Cloud Engineering positions that are 5 to 8 mil then on the same board 10 to 15 mil? These seem to be very large disparities for similar roles and requirements? Also, how feasible would it be for a company to offer relocation services? I was looking at Microsoft or AWS directly as they might be more willing to pay to send skilled labor to help build out their Cloud networks. But idk if that is just wishful thinking?

  1. A glance at [Japan Dev](https://japan-dev.com/jobs) shows a couple dozen jobs when filtering for Devops, SRE, Security, and relocation OK. So there’s certainly stuff out there. It might be worth trying to reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn for more potential opportunities.

I think you’ve answered your own question – it’s a mixed bag. Much like anywhere else in the world, some companies value these roles more than others. I’d imagine the companies that pay well and are good to work for are also more competitive and discerning about who they hire; however, I also imagine that these companies are more willing to hire from abroad for the right candidate. Once you get a job and are in Japan, you’ll have much more options for future moves to different companies, as well as being able to tap into a wider recruitment network.
