2 weeks in July: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagoya

Good morning. My mom (55) and I (30) are looking at our forst trip to Japan in July. She is very active (bikes/runs) and climbing Mt. Fuji is a must for her.

July 6th (Thursday): Land in Haneda Airport 2PM, Bullet Train to Tokyo (looking at a hotel in Shibuya), Shibuya Sky/Crossing, walk around in the evening

7th (Friday): Akihabara for a few hours, Gundam Base

8th (Saturday): Ghibli Museum and nearby parks (Possibly Pokemon Center)

9th (Sunday): easy morning, check out local church, head to and climb Mt. Fuji

10th (Monday): Sunrise at Mt. Fuji, descend, Bullet Train to Osaka, maybe some people watching/light evening

11th (Tuesday): Osaka Castle and Museum of History, Dotonbori in the evening

12th (Wednesday): Explore Shinsekai and Amerikamura, head to Kyoto

13th (Thursday): Arashiyama Bamboo Forest/Monkey Park, Tenryuji, Okoshi Sanso Garden (too much?)

14th (Friday): Kinkakuji & Kinukake Road, Kyoto Imperial Palace

15th (Saturday): people watch and explore Hanamikuji Street, see KyoAni, quick visit to Nara Deer Park, head to Nagoya

16th (Sunday): check out church I watch online, Nagoya Castle, Tokugawa Art Museum

17th (Monday): Ghibli Park and the surrounding park then head back to Tokyo

18th (Tuesday): Yoyogi Park, Sensoji, Tobu Museum

19th (Wednesday): people watch, head to Haneda Airport and fly home.

I’m really into games and anime. Have gotten mom interested in Ghibli and some games. Trying to balance that side of things with the natural beauty and history of Japan. I checked many other Intinerary threads and appreciate the gold mine of information. The must do items are: Fuji, the Ghibli attractions (pending tickets), and the church in Nagoya. I think I planned things on the days they are open (might have missed one or two). I am open to suggestions otherwise. Also, wondering if we should to JR passes. Thank you for any help you can provide!

  1. July 6th: no need to bullet train to Tokyo. Tokyo is accessible from Haneda via normal trains.

Fuji: Your plan is good. Though you may want to stay in Shizuoka city after coming down the mountain. You’ll probably be super tired.

Osaka: good plan. Dotonbori is cool and great for eating.

July 13: Arashiyama and monkey park are cool. Really enjoyed them both.

Kyoto: I’d add Kiyomizu temple to your itinerary. It’s a great temple. Also, the international manga museum is in Kyoto.

Nara: you should add Todaiji temple, home of the giant Buddha.

Nagoya: excellent plans. Tokugawa Art Museum is good. If you’re lucky they’ll have the original Tale of Genji on display. You gotta try miso katsu while in Nagoya. That’s a famous dish from Nagoya.

Make sure you get the JR Railpass. It’ll save your money on transportation.

    Have fun!
