Hi everyone, I’m a PhD student who just arrived in Osaka as a visiting research fellow with a 1-year Visa for Cultural Activities. Despite searching through this subreddit I can’t stop being confused since some bank accounts are officially not allowed to foreigners arriving in less than 6 months.
I considered Shinsei Bank but the 6-month rule is stated on their official site, and also SMBC I’m afraid will reject me. Possibly only Japan Post may be open at my conditions?
I know also some foreign banks have branches here in Japan like Barclays, and having already a UK account with them I’m wondering if this may help to be provided me with a JP account along with my already existing account.
Thank you!

Japan Post bank is a good choice. Once you are past that 6 month mark more options will open up for you.
Japan post bank is the only bank that will let you open an account
