Anyone else receive this message from Reddit today?

Can’t post images, so I’ll just copy-paste it here:

>Hey!

>We identified you as a true expert of Reddit! Use this superpower and help Japan discover the best communities of Reddit!

>Spread the word on Facebook

>Invite Japan via Twitter

>With great power comes great responsibility – we count on you!

>Your Reddit Team

I don’t know what to make of this other than Reddit is probably trying to market to Japan now?

  1. Yeah I got it too. “A true expert of Reddit,” I’ve never been so insulted in my life lol.

Presumably they’re doing it because Twitter JP fired its “moderators” and so the “now trending” function shows what’s actually trending rather than what they would like to be trending.

  2. From what I’ve read in some of the help subs, everyone who connects from Japan got spammed with that message. Apparently, Reddit wants to build up a Japanese community, so they’re soliciting everyone in Japan in an effort to get us to recruit Japanese members. My Japanese husband hates online discussion communities like this, though, so he’s definitely out.

  3. Right after I received this message, random ppl started nodding to me on trains and while waiting at pedestrian crossroads.

  4. Yeah, I got this. I only joined like a week ago and I’ve already been recognized by the big boys.
I’m gonna put this on my resume.

  5. “You’re a true expert on reddit”. With how short I’ve been on here, I thought it was some type of scam.

  6. Yeah, I don’t know how they can blatantly ask for free advertising, but also do such a poor job of giving any direction or incentive.

What do they want us to do? Tell our Twitter bot followers to come watch people ask for legal advice?

  7. I came onto Reddit to see what this email was about, and your post was the first thing to pop up. Ahaha, just perfect!

  8. I thought it was telling me that I spend too much time on Reddit, but apparently it’s just telling me I live in Japan.

  9. received one as well, apparently they want a foothold here in japan, but as if i’ll endorse my bullshits to everyone.

  10. I had it as well. Had no clue it was getting spread to other folks as well, and so far it seems to be only in this subreddit; I haven’t gotten similar notifications from other subs I’m in.

  11. Saw it last night and just assumed a handful of newer Redditors in Japan get it. Didn’t expect the country to get spammed at once

  12. Just give it a month before the most popular tweets look like #LastWeekendInHubNowLookingForUrologist and #HelpMeHanakoWantsDivorce

  13. Yep, got it too. I’m neither on Facebook or Twitter so I couldn’t do free marketing for them if I wanted.
