Hi all,
Still fairly beginner, working slowly on my own time.
I was doing Duolingo today (yeah i know, it could be better). And i came across a basic sentence as i move through basic Katakana and Introductions.
The sentence here was:
Ms. Nakamura is a student
The answer was:
(Kanji for ‘Ms Nakaumura’ that idk how to type) は、がくせい です
My question at a very base level is if I’m understanding this translation correctly as it pertains to the は.
Would it be proper to understand it as “as for”?
Like:
“As for (は) Ms. Nakamura, she is a (です ) student”
I hope i made that clear enough to understand 😅

Yes, that is the function of the topic marker は. The “as for” translation is a more roundabout and textbook way of going about it, but it can be understood as that.
