  1. I bought my PS3 at this store on this day of the week at this time — exactly one week before this happened. I saw the crime scene picture in the papers and news and couldn’t believe it. Right out there in the open.

  2. This happened right before I moved to Japan for two years. It almost gave me pause about going. Almost.

  3. I wondered how they execute people in Japan, and according to Wiki 🤷🏻‍♀️ prisoners are executed with very little warning and are told they are going to die on the morning of their execution, usually about an hour before. They are executed by long drop hanging where their neck is swiftly broken using a rope and a trap door. I had no idea.

  4. “An interview with Katō’s brother revealed that his parents had put immense pressure on both of them to perform and to excel in their studies, ordering them to redo their homework to high standards in order to impress teachers in school, and recalled one incident when Katō was made to eat scraps of food from the floor.Another neighbor recounted an incident where Katō’s parents forced him to stand outside for hours in deep, cold snow during winter.

Not excusing this mass murderers actions but its always people with shitty upbringing like this that act on violent impulses

  5. I was here, too. Crossed the intersection 10 minutes before Kato drove the truck through. Was sitting in a coffee shop with my friend talking, and didn’t notice him stop the truck directly in front of the shop and get out to start stabbing. We only noticed a few minutes later when we heard the sirens and saw a bunch of people outside. We went out and saw the carnage. It really made me think about how just a bit of time can change your life.

  6. The family fell apart after that. The murderer’s brother committed suicide a few years after the incident due to shame and constant harassment, mother was admitted to a mental health facility, and father resigned from his banking job and became a recluse. I think the parents also divorced.

  7. This is most likely in response to PM Shinzo Abe’s death. They probably want to make sure criminals do not have the courage to carry out such acts in the future.

  8. I imagine waking up in the morning and wondering if this is the day you will be hanged would make some inmates insane.

  9. Damn, it’s been 14 yrs?? I still remember seeing this on the news as a 10 yr old kid growing up in Tokyo
