Isn’t it frustrating that you can’t read almost anything online?

I like to learn languages. I like learning languages to also read random texts in Wikipedia, news websites, etc, and try to understand as much as possible, or try to “detect” the words I already know.

Isn’t it frustrating that you can’t really do this in Japanese? I’m still in the beginning of N5, but it feels like also when I finish N5 (or N4) I can’t really do this because there are a lot of words I can’t read (because of the unknown kanjis)

  1. Have you installed a pop-up dictionary extension like Yomichan/Rikaikun? If not, those might help with reading random texts.

  2. Yes, that’s what learning a language is like. For the first 500-1500 hours, “comprehensible input” is more in textbooks and the like than anything else.

  3. Yomichan is your friend! If you keep reading you’ll be able to “detect” more and more words each time.
