I am playing animal crossing in Japanese to help me with my reading and vocabulary. I am still very much a beginner so it’s quite difficult, but most words I don’t know I can look up so it’s all good.
However… When I walk up to stick on the ground, I get the word “きのえだ”, which I can’t find in the dictionary and Google can’t translate. I know this might be a bit basic, but:
1. Can someone please let me know what this word means?
2. Can anyone offer tips on looking stuff like this up if I can’t find it in a dictionary? Are there other ways to find out without asking … ?

It means tree branch and is actually two words “ki” means tree, “eda” is a branch, and “no” is a possessive particle, kind of like English “of” in this case.
“Branch of tree” or “Tree’s branch”
Particles really like to sneak in and look like a word, so sometimes you can try getting rid of what you think might be a particle and searching what remains as separate words in the dictionary.
It’s 木の枝
木 (tree)
枝 branch)
Everything together: branch of a tree
Tree branch.
