The right way to learn vocab ?

What’s the right way to learn vocab ?
Currently the only think I’m doing is using an anki deck but should I be writing them out or anything?
I’m not writing out any vocab since I don’t know the Kanji for most of the vocab I’m learning. Is learning through anki only sufficient? Any tips ? How do I know I’m retaining what I’m learning , are there any reading resources based on jlpt level ?
Thank you 🙂

  1. What I’m doing is writting out the vocabulary at least 3 times each when I go through Genki chapters. I figure their curated vocabulary list is a good way to get the ball rolling.

I reinforce that ny reading the dialogue.

I then further reinforce it by doing the moe way anki deck.

At first I wasn’t sure how that would go, but I’m really happy with the results. it took about 2 or three months but it’s all converging now and reinforcing each other.

  2. Overall, it seems like Anki + immersion is the best way people know about so far.

There are many variations within this space though. Like how people immerse, what SRS program they use (others besides Anki exist), what anki settings they use, what kinds of cards they use, etc.

Vocabulary seems to be one of the biggest chunks of “stuff” to acquire in Japanese, so I wonder if anyone has another idea.
