Getting first British passport for my daughter

Can I do this online even if she was born in Japan? Or do I need to go to the embassy to register her birth first? Am I just allowed to walk in there? Or do I need to book an appointment?

This has probably been answered many times but having a hard time getting the correct answer.
Thanks!

  1. Anything at the embassy requires an appointment. They do bugger all, anyway; damn their eyes.

GOV.UK and the GRO are the two main things you’ll need on the UK side.

We got our two boys their British passports more or less like this:

    1. Google “uk register a birth abroad.” Do the procedure. Later, you will be able to get UK birth certificates from the GRO. Samurai Translators are very good for the docs you need to get translated.
    1. When 1 is done, google “overseas British passport applications.” Follow the procedures to apply as the parent of your child.

Make sure you have birth details for your parents, as you may need to request copies of their birth certificates too, as well as your own, via the GRO.

Get a reliable witness lined up, who can vouch for the authenticity of your child. They may be visited by men from the ministry.

Take a gander at the prices for each thing beforehand. With birth certificates from the GRO, it may be worth requesting multiple copies, in case you need to use them later for other things.

The man at the photoshop next to the passport office knows how to take passport photos according to the spec that you give him. If your child is still a baby, you may need to hold them up.

It’s not that complicated, but does take a bit of time getting everything together.
