I passed N1–now what?

Hi guys, I passed N1 a while ago but I’m struggling to find ways to dramatically improve my Japanese from here

My Situation: I have been an interpreter for a few years now, and my boss would like me to improve my writing skills and perfect my grammar

I try to use my Japanese every day, even when not at work but I feel that I am not improving at a particularly impressive rate.

Any other post-N1 peeps have experience with improving in a fast manner? What did you do? My office is willing to pay for lessons for me but I don’t know any schools that seem like a proper fit for me in Tokyo or online, and I’m about to have kid #3 so I don’t really have the time for lessons until maybe May or later next year.

  1. For writing skills if you don’t already an easy thing to do is write your emails in gmail and note the autocorrect grammar

  2. Write some N3 graded readers, get them proofread by a professional and release them for free.

(It can be anything. An email can be a ‘graded reader’.)

  3. I think at this stage, you are better off with private lessons rather than a school (unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean by school).

Also, if you’re not already one, you could try upskilling to real-time interpreter. Super useful skill in multilingual business meetings. Some large conferences also use them so everyone in the audience can understand the presentation.

  4. Well, the sad thing is the better you are the more incremental your progress so I don’t think you’re going to find something for *dramatic* progress. This isn’t meant to be discouraging, I just think it’s good to have realistic expectations.

I think the only real way is to use it and get feedback. Maybe a tutor who will correct things you write, use sites like langcorrect, ask for feedback from your coworkers on work emails you write, etc. I think the feedback is really important because you need to know what *you* personally do wrong, since you’re past studying general grammar and vocab.
