Are Osaka salaries lower?

I have a CS degree from a Canadian uni and almost completed my masters in CS from a top US school. My offers in Tokyo range from 6.5 million to 8.5 million yen per year. However, my latest offer in Osaka is 5.85 million and the recruiter is emphasizing that things like rent are half of what they are in Tokyo.

1. Is this accurate? That rent is 50% Tokyo?
2. Is it generally true that salaries in Osaka are lower?

I would be a Seishain and long run want to buy a house so wondering if that salary difference is going to hurt me.

The attractive thing about this company is that it’s small, my role is varied and it sounds like I am going to get to do everything from scratch, ie. systems design to implementation so it’s really good experience.

  1. Heads up: if you’re not Japanese and that’s your first job in IT, don’t move to Japan just yet. Get 3-4 years of experience, then move to Japan on a highly skilled professional visa – try to get 80 points (iirc?) and you’ll be eligible for permanent residency in 1 year. Then, you will be able to remove the stress of dealing with visas, and do stuff like work remotely for foreign companies and make the big bucks while living in Japan.
