   going to hire one more female faculty member per department.

   This announcement is good in that it shows they are moving in the right direction. But it’s simultaneously embarrassing because it reveals how few female faculty they have now. There is a HUGE gender gap in Japanese universities. Almost all Deans and Senior administrators are male because there are so few women among the faculty.

5. Inevitably, this will mean they’ll discriminate against some talented, humble and hardworking man who did nothing wrong.

   Quotas in hiring is discrimination and opposite of fairness. To be fair is to be agnostic to gender.

   You can break up demographics into infinite possibilities.What you’ll end up with is, for example, a union of red-headed, wheelchaired, demisexual, Siamese mormons demanding that they’re not fairly represented, and that they need to be OVER-represented at the expense of everyone else.

   It’s just not sustainable. Be fair regardless of your socially-constructed identity.

6. Japanese top universities are bulwarks for the right-wing, old guard who dream of returning to the golden age of Nippon glory and “traditional” values.

7. Hope they’re hiring based on ability & not gender.
