Hello! Incoming JET here arriving in Okayama-ken at the end of July with a spouse. My husband is big into bowling and has done it all of his life. He really wants to be able to bring his shoes, balls, equipment, etc. with him. However, we’re unsure of the best route for that. Bowling balls are moderately temperature sensitive as well. Should he take some as a carry-on? Just do airmail?
Thanks in advance!

If he can make concessions, the less he has to pack and can buy in Japan instead (like towels or shoes since you can buy them in Japan), the better. Otherwise it’ll probably be best to carry his ball with him if he’s concerned. The airline might require him to check it in though so be prepared for that.
Buy new bowling balls when he gets here, bring everything else. It will probably be cheaper than having them shipped here and back when you leave.
I’d ship the equipment, or put it in hold luggage if you have room, but tit sounds like the best option for the balls themselves is probably carry on, if they’re not too heavy…
How many balls are we talking about? If it is just one, then you should bring it in your hand luggage. Look at different airlines that your consulate takes and research their hand luggage restrictions. My hand luggage was restricted to 15lbs. I don’t know if professional bowlers use over that weight, but a ball may end up being the entirety of your hand luggage.
If you are shipping by airmail or checking them in on the plane, they will go through the same temperature change, right? Your best option for that would be sending by sea. You will have to check if that is an option for you. Even then, the temperature will probably be cold.
Wow. I thought this was r/JETProgrammecirclejerk for a second.
