  1. Why do Japan hate foreigners so much? It’s already impossible for many tourist to buy concerts and event tickets without a Japanese phone number.

  2. Wouldn’t it be more economical to simply put up massive neon `JAPANESE` `ONLY` signs at the entrance of each venue?

A complex sociological and technological solution to Japanese ticket scalpers fucking people over seems to be more complicated than it needs to be, when there are already tried and trusted solutions available.

  3. >Digital agency wants to link sports and concert ticket purchases to resident-only government-issued ID card.

    >The Digital Agency’s suggestion is that when buying tickets, you’d be required to touch your My Number Card, which is equipped with an IC chip, to your smartphone before you could finalize the purchase. You’d then also be required to present your My Number Card on the day of the event before being let into the stadium, concert hall, or theater.

    >The advantage to this system, the Digital Agency says, is that the increased security and improved identity confirmation would help prevent ticket scalping.

    >Ticket purchases and event entry requiring a My Number Card, something only residents of Japan can obtain, would essentially lock travelers and short-term visitors out of live entertainment events unless organizers go to the trouble of setting up a completely separate purchase protocol for them.

  4. I suspect this is really more about the government trying everything they can think of to get people to use my number cards more.

  5. The chances of this being implemented are low.

    1. Japanese residents don’t like the idea.

    2. Quite a few ARE allowed to be resold and this would make it next to impossible.

    3. The agency that put this forward isn’t the one who would actually cover things like ticketing.

    4. The actual execution of this would be a mess, because what about multiple tickets bought at once? What about minors who go alone, but whose tickets were purchased by their parents?
