I was born a Japanese/American dual citizen and have had a Japanese passport up until ~2 years ago. It has since expired and since I couldn’t go to Japan because of covid, I didn’t think of renewing it. Now that I am able to go to Japan, I want to renew my Japanese passport but am I able to without the embassy making me renounce my Japanese citizenship?

Unlikely. I don’t recall reading any changes re: dual citizenship status. My passport expired when I was 23 and it was just not worth the hoops to jump through to renew it.
